Week 4 – Assignment: Create Change in a Public Policy
This week’s assignment focuses on the theory that describes the unique characteristics of change in public organizations. Public administration change theory is rooted in general change theory.
You are a new leader in a state unemployment department. The organization has been under intense pressure to improve its operations to improve response time for processing unemployment claims and reduce claims errors. The department also needs to improve its relationships with other state organizations, legislators, and the people it serves. In addition, the department previously received money to upgrade its antiquated computer system and has not done so. The organization is in a state of crisis. You are asked to produce an executive briefing for senior department leaders and state officials regarding approaches to change in this challenging situation. In your briefing include:
Discuss the importance of change for the organization and its benefits
Discuss how the policy environment will impact change activities
Describe three different types of change processes/theories the organization might consider
Identify the “best fit” type of change for the organization
Discuss at least three leadership skills that are important for successful change management
Be sure to relate your briefing materials to the identified change areas including processing claims, improving relationships with other organizations and policymakers, and improving service to clients.
Length: 4-6 pages not including the title page and references.
References: Include a minimum of five scholarly references.
The completed assignment should address all of the assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course. The writing should integrate scholarly resources, reflect academic expectations and current APA standards, and adhere to the NorthcentraiUniversityt s Academic Integrity Policy.
