The demand for health care providers and nurses is projected to grow by approximately 6% in the next three years. For effective forecasting, it is necessary to analyze the current and past trends in the sector especially after the introduction of Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The paper will analyze the assumptions and factors to be considered when forecasting the future nationwide demand for nurses 20 years from now. The major and most obvious variables are population growth and effects of new drugs.
The overall goals of federal government in seeing to it that they deliver quality and accessible health care services will influence the demand of nurses. In order to deliver their promise of improved patient outcomes, more nurses will have to be deployed to the healthcare services (Atlas, 2010). The nurses will need specialized and regular training to remain relevant in the face of changing technology. There is also the need to ascertain the effectiveness of workforce research such that the current nurses are able to meet patient needs without much strain. The impact of future technological advances which could replace some nurses activities need to be considered since they could also affect the workforce demand.
Distribution and availability of nurses currently as well as prospective ones in schools needs to be considered in determination of future demand levels. If the levels are low, there will most likely be a crisis in future which would force the government to seek labor from other countries to meet healthcare demands (Johnson, 2016). It is important to consider the current and future budget projections in relation to health care needs and ascertain whether the two match. A deficit will mean that the government needs to increase the budgetary allocation to the sector for efficiency. The industry trend will also assist in future forecasting depending on whether the industry is a shrinking or expanding one. The governmental Acts that support efficient healthcare services also affect demand of nurses in the future.
