“Power without Authority”

I disagree with Richard Sennett on the supposition that teamwork creates a “power without authority.” Although people have different perception concerning collaboration and empowerment, the assertion that such experience of the leader is never considered cannot be right. People are emancipated and know what is best for them at all time, and furthermore, they form a team on free will. They assess the merits and demerits of engagement and can afterward make informed choices. Teamwork has an aspect of openness, and members can interact freely during the working process (Crowley, Payne & Kennedy, 2014). The leader of a team become chosen by group member and the criteria for qualification are adhered to in several of the group.

The perception that people may have power without authority can only occur in situations that are characterized by anarchy if at all there is a possibility of such a situation. Even in disorderliness, there is pecking orders and natural instinct that drives the movements (Goetsch & Davis, 2014). A group with power and no authority can only exist in a vacuum and since this is impossible such a situation can never arise. However, there is a slippery slope to his argument, whenever the terms power and authority are not correctly defined. In a team, words power and authority are inseparable, and each must exist for the other to exist.

Richard Sennett in the generalization principle makes a grave proposition that originality is weeded away in responsive thinking approach. Human have self-determination autonomy that is never alienated from them and therefore the conclusion that there is fiction harmony in the group is not only untrue but it slight human brilliance.
