How can you determine a core competency?

“The Characteristics of Core Competencies

The characteristics of core competencies are as follows:

1. They provide a set of unifying principles for the organization and they are pervasive in all strategies.
2. They provide access to a variety of markets.
3. They are critical in producing end products.
4. They are rare or difficult to imitate.” (stanford.edu 2016)

This tells me that using this list can help us determine a core competency. Additionally I believe that a core competency is something not easily countered by competition or changed by outside environmental forces.
