Lesson Reflection
The provision of education encompass enlightening learners about their surroundings. The lesson was designed to enlighten the learners about their neighborhood and the community they live. This is in line with the New Jersey State Standard 6.3. I designed lesson that encompasses a visit to different physical features in the neighborhood. The visitations could also include noting different cultural orientations in the neighborhood. Utilizing the learners’ information about the neighborhood encompassed their personal knowledge, family and cultural background.
The time allocated for the lesson was insufficient. I could change the time allocation for the lesson. Learners were excited about the prospect of visiting the neighborhood and seeing different cultural orientations. Their excitement led to time wastage. I could ensure that I introduce the lesson in a prior lesson, that way the learners could be aware of the next lesson. The level of excitement could be minimized during the learning process. Despite the distractions, the excitement implied that the learners were interested in the lesson. The learners were engaged in the learning process.
I monitored the reaction of all learners and their level of excitement. Despite the excitement, there were some learners that were not as excited as the rest. They were mainly the English language learners. I had to repeat some concepts concerning physical features in the neighborhood. Further, I had to name some physical features in their first languages. This way they felt part of the learning process and they kept with the pace of other learners.
My mentor teacher advises on the need to ensure that the class is fully controlled throughout. Time management is of essence in the learning process. I had a challenge in time management due to uncontrolled excitement. Instituting the time management measures through effective class control as the mentor teacher advised will enhance the learning process.
