Journal Entry 1: Motivation

Motivation is key to succeeding and reaching your goals. What motivated me to go to Grand Canyon University is that I figured out what I wanted to do, to become an Elementary School teacher. GCU seemed like the college for me, it was convenient and had online classes which worked with my schedule. Starting my first class got me excited as well as motivated me to achieve higher education immediately, and to start my dream job!

Motivation is important to student success because without motivation it would be very difficult to succeed with whatever academic goals the student has set. Stacey Doan, a Boston University psychology professor once said “Her most successful students have had genuine interest in the topic they are studying, self-discipline and an enduring educational curiosity.”(Doan, 2013, pg.1)  There are many things you can do to keep yourself motivated such as, organization, setting alarms, and time management, will help a student reach success.

I think the discussion forums really help you connect with your classmates, being able to talk back and forth and read how everyone feels about topics. It also keeps me motivated by reading what everyone else’s opinions on the topic are and seeing them motivated encourages me as well. I think motivation rubs off on people.

After reflecting on the key objectives, a takeaway for me is motivation is the key to success. Students have to keep in mind what inspired them to start their goals in the first place. Without the will to finish something, you will never have the motivation to finish the task.
