Two areas in which EBP has improved patient care outcome is in pressure ulcer prevention and Ventilator Bundles. Prevention of pressure ulcers is a goal that every facility has. While pressure ulcers prevention can be viewed as a quality improvement agenda, it is also one that was improved with EBP. With the colaboration of a quality improvement nurse and a research nurse, several interventions were set in place to decrease the incidence of hospital aquired pressure ulcers. Turning a patient every two hours, selecting the appropriate mattress or bed for the patient, skin care program and hygiene are all interventions that can reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers. Other methods to assist are nutrition and physical activity, whether it’s active or passive. EBP also showed that by creating skin care champions to monitor and develop unit base solutions, pressure incidence can decrease.
After conducting research on how to prevent pneumonia associated with the use of ventilators several interventions were set in place such as elevating the head of the bed 30- 45 degrees, oral care every 2-4 hours, and maintaining ET tube cuff pressure between 20 and 25cm H2O. With furthermore study other implemantations were added that significantly reduced ventilator associated pneumonia. In addition to the already mentioned preventative measures, prophalaxative treament of peptic ulcer disease and deep vein thrombosis, and allowing sedation vacation have been included in current national policies and quality-improvement initiatives aimed at improving ventilator care.
