NRS-433V Topic 3 DQ 2
What is sampling theory? Describe it and provide examples to illustrate your definition. Discuss generalizability as it applies to nursing research.
Sampling involves selecting a group of people, events, objects, or other elements with which to conduct a study. A sampling method or plan defines the selection process, and the sample defines the selected group of people (or elements) (Grove, Grave & Burns, 2015).
Sampling theory was developed to determine the most effective way to acquire a sample that accurately reflects the population under study. Key concepts of sampling theory include populations, target population, sampling or eligibility criteria, accessible population, elements, representativeness, sampling frames, and sampling methods or plans (Grove, Grave & Burns, 2015).
An example would be research on Obesity. Every person that is obese has the same opportunity to be selected. If want to only research on obesity among hispanics then that would be a systematic selection.
Generalizability is applied by researchers in an academic setting. It can be defined as the extension of research findings and conclusions from a study conducted on a sample population to the population at large. While the dependability of this extension is not absolute, it is statistically probable(Writing @SCU, n.d.).
Generalizability applies to nursing in that many of our nursing approach or nursing interventions have come about after carefully studying or rsearching a large population vs a small sample group.
