PCN 605 Topic 2 DQ 2
As a diagnostic tool, the DSM includes diagnostic criteria for mental disorders. In addition, it includes information such as prevalence, risks, prognoses, gender-related issues, and cultural considerations for these disorders. What role might this information play in diagnosis and treatment?
Role of gender, culture and prevalence in the diagnosis and treatment of DMS
All the causes of these disorders come from our surroundings, where we come from and our ways of life. Lately, the topic of depression and anxiety has been on our social media. People are talking about them (Spitzer 2011). Their experiences and how they all overcame them. The causes, diagnosis and the treatment all takes us back to our societies. Gender-related issues and how our cultures view mental disorders.
Family history in the diagnosis of these disorders is important in the treatment of these cases. Mental disorders are inherited and knowing the background of each disorder gives doctors ideas on how to deal with a patient and increases the accuracy of the treatment administered.
These factors play a very big role in the treatment of mental disorders. When it comes to mental disorders, there is no question of gender, it affects all genders. We tend to think that women are the only people who go through depression which is not the case. Men too are affected by these disorders, accepting that anyone can be diagnosed with a mental disorder can lead to early diagnosis and treatment, (Spitzer 2011).
Prevalence can be a motivation for people suffering from these disorders to seek medical help and also acceptance. It gives us the awareness of these issues among us and helps to find a way of dealing with it and also helps in planning medical help for the affected people.
