ECE 620 Topic 6 DQ 2
How important is the text-to-self connection for students to develop a love of reading and to support fluency and comprehension? Explain.
Text-to-self connection create a link between a reader’s experiences and the literary materials they are interacting with. That connection creates a familiarity for the reader. For instance, when a text details a vacation that the characters ad, the reader can relate with a vacation to an uncle’s farm. Learners in kindergarten try to correlate school life and their home experiences. The learning process is continuous. Therefore, the correlation between the experiences learners have gone through and the new texts they read in school makes the learning process enjoyable and relatable.
Learners relate with stories that are similar to their experiences. The vocabularies used are identifiable and thus they can follow along. Kindergarten learners have a short concentration span. Having stories they identify with enhances their concentration span in the reading process. The familiarity they create with reading stories increase their curiosity to read further. This improves the children’s fluency as well as comprehension.
