Nursing Discussion Question – Review of Current Healthcare Issues

The rising healthcare expense has been selected as the analysis’ focus national healthcare concern. The rise in costs for healthcare services, prescription drugs, and insurance premiums has recently become a significant issue for both patients and healthcare professionals (Norful et al., 2018). Being a nurse in a busy urban hospital has significantly impacted me. Rising healthcare expenditures have many effects on my workplace, which are numerous. The patients’ increased financial burden is one significant effect. Many people need help to finance necessary medical care, which causes them to put off getting treatment or not follow treatment plans. This can, therefore, result in worsened health outcomes and increased hospital admissions because of issues that could have been avoided. Furthermore, the financial load may cause patients to feel less satisfied with their care and lose faith in the healthcare system since they may believe that their well-being is being put at risk to maximize profits.

One notable social component that substantially impacts this healthcare issue is socioeconomic status. Patients from poor economic origins are more vulnerable to the effects of high healthcare prices. Financial limitations may prevent them from receiving necessary care, escalating already-existing health inequities. Furthermore, this situation may force families to choose between paying for healthcare and other essential needs, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and poor health outcomes (Broome & Marshall, 2017). My healthcare system has implemented various reforms to address the problem of rising healthcare expenditures. Adopting value-based care models, prioritizing preventative measures and resource optimization while emphasizing care quality over quantity, is a significant strategy. The health system attempts to reduce the demand for expensive treatments and hospital stays by emphasizing early intervention and preventative care.

Additionally, to provide underprivileged communities with more accessible and affordable care options, my company has formed relationships with community clinics and social services. These initiatives target the financial burden-creating social determinants of health, such as insufficient access to care and education. Investments have been made in health technology solutions to improve communication among healthcare professionals, lower administrative expenses, and streamline operations. This has led to the provision of care becoming more streamlined and affordable.
