AMP 434 Week 4 Staffing & Compensation Plan Benchmark Assessment

Staffing and Compensation

There are so many different things to consider when hiring on others within the workplace. Some of these things are, but not limited too, what kind of health care packages you will be needing, what kind of incentives you will be giving, and what kind of employees you want working for you. With all these things to think about, you have to know what you want before you hire.

Since our company is new and in need extra hands, we will need a staff with a friendly demeanor. They need to be able to listen, have patience, and have an understanding of what the customer wants to have done with their items of clothing. Next we have to consider work experience. We would prefer for the person to have had some kind of customer service experience. Also, the position they are applying for they need to bring in samples of their work. For the job our firm needs new personal in three key positions. We need a front desk personal (customer service, front house), steamer (back house), and assistant tailor. However, in time, each person should be able to do all three jobs. Upon the hiring of the employee they will have to go through an orientation and training week. During this week they will learn exactly what is expected of them and what they need to do to be able to keep their jobs. Part of the training will be on the job training. They will learn what their main job will be and then they will also get a taste of what the other positions entitle.

Since we are only open 8am to 6pm Monday through Saturday, we will need to hire two people per position and make them all part time hours. This will not only save the company money, we will all be able to have every Sunday off, plus each employee would get one extra day during the week off. Also, it will elevate have to pay over time to any one employee incase they do stay an extra hour or two past their normal shift when the work load is more then usual or there is a need for a case to case bases.

Since we are a family owned business, it is preferable to have people who live in town and close to the shop. So we are going to post signs up in our window, and in the local paper. We are going to specify what we are looking for. We are also going to make it apparent that we are only going to be hiring 6 new employees for part time work.

Once each application is submitted, we will have a one on one interview with the perspective employee. We will have a list of what questions to ask. Also, during the interview, we will be making the person aware that in order to have this job we will be conducting a background investigations and there will be random drug testing. We have a zero drug policy and if found immediate termination of employment or application will be the consequence.

When talking about a compensation plan we will be basing our plans off the federal guidelines. We will start all employees off at the state minimum wage which is for the state of California 9.00 a hour. They will have this pay as a 6 month probation period. After this time we will then bring them up to 10.00 a hour. Of course there will have Christmas Bonus’s and employee of the quarter as incentives to want to be the very best. Since we are only hiring for part time work and not full time we will be able to give them more then minimum wage after the successful completion of their probation period.

Now lets talk about health care packages. Since we are not going to hire for full time we are not obligated to give out health care. According to the Health Care Reform bill, since our company doesn’t have 50 or more full time employees so we are just going to have to pay a tax at the end of each year. However, we will do vacation packages. For each employee we will give 2.5 days of paid leave a month starting after their 6 month probation period to use when ever they wish without repercussion. We are also a very understanding company when it comes to sickness and family emergency. We will also give situational leave of 1.5 free paid leave a month after the probation period. Childs first day of school will be a off day with pay and same goes for graduation day. We also understand that if you are in student status then we will give one week of paid leave ( semester or quarter depending on the schools schedule) to study for your finals. If we do decide to hire on the part time employees to full time positions, we will offer blue shield medical and dental insurance.

In the break room there will be signs for the wages and all company policies. This will be in accordance with the federal law. This will also cover situational policies such as racism and sexual harassment and our drug policy. We will have each employee sign paper work upon first day of training in acknowledgement and understanding that if any of these happen within the workplace we have a zero tolerance for this kind of behavior and are punishable by immediate termination.

Each physical year we will have a company audit. We will be giving out surveys to each employee. These surveys shall be kept anonymous to make sure that the employees know there isn’t going to be any repercussions for what is said. It is just to let our hirer ups know how we are doing and if there is any thing that we can do to better accommodate the people who are working for us. There will also be a suggestion box in the front of the store and one in the break room. This will be only viewable by management and each thing put in the box will be answered within 1 month. However, the box will only be checked at close of business Saturday night. The answers will be in the company monthly newsletter. We will encourage each person that puts a suggestion into the box to also give reasonable solutions to what ever problem they are trying to fix. This will show us that they are serious about what they want and are putting effort into our business.

With all the information available to hiring on a new staff we have to take everything into consideration. We have taken into consideration how many people we will need to fulfill a full day’s work, how much we should pay each person upon employment. What kind of training is needed and how long the training should be. What kind of compensation plan if any we should make available if applicable. We also talk about how each employee has a voice and can be heard through suggestion. With this solid plan, we should be able to hire the right kind of people for our company.
