Evidence-based practice proposal: Change model

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the use of clinical research to make significant decisions. It involves the integration of suitable clinical expertise, and patient consultation on the treatment methods they prefer so they can be given effective care based on a thorough decision-making process. The main aim of Evidence-based practice is increasing efficiency and effectiveness of clinical interventions which leads to reduced costs and risks. The practice involves identifying where the problem, reviewing the relevant literature, analyzing the evidence, applying what has been found and assessing the results (Black et al., 2015). To achieve this, many EBP models are applied by clinicians.

Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory

Diffusion of innovation theory is a social science methodology applied in explaining overtime changes. The theory explains that over time, an applied idea or product become common and then its use spreads and gets normalized within a specific population (Nasser, 2015). In this case, a persistentevidence-based practice accepted by both the clinicians and patients gets adopted in the healthcare system as one of the most effective treatment methods. Diffusion of innovation means that the idea is very new but gets adopted especially after its effectiveness is observed.  The method will only diffuse and get promoted if it is proved that it is new and that it has more benefits than the initial practices.

Evidence-based practice depends on researching a treatment method which is then appliedin practice. Roger’s Diffusion of innovation theory is very helpful in this situation because for a method to be accepted and finally adopted in the system. There are procedures that the clinician must take. One reason for the application of this model in evidence-based practice is overcoming the obstacles that face the EBP system. The adaptation of EBP practices involves processes that both the clinician and patient have to be familiar with.

Individual innovation, knowledge, attitude, and age are some of the factors that influence the adaptation of EBP. These variables are necessary for the diffusion of the EBP because knowledge of the subject means it is understood. However, attitude plays a greater part in the diffusion of the EBP methods because the involved parties have to approve of the methodologies involved. Clinical practitioners especially nurses are usually responsible for providing Evidence-based practice services. They have to apply EBP to ensure that that they give efficient services through making the right decisions.

Through the diffusion of innovation theory, the nurses can research and find out new methods of approaching a condition. As an innovation, it means that this method is new and works better than the previous methods. This is a change model because when the new method is adopted and diffused in the system, it will influence behavioral change (Mohammadi, Poursaberi, &Salahshoor, 2018).As usual, the advancement of technology is making medical procedures faster, effective and in many cases cheaper than the previous methods. After identifying a practice though researching several approved sources, the nurse will them apply it which marks its diffusion. As a clinical framework, Evidence-based practice depends on the success of the hierarchal steps, the research, therefore, must be accurate from the very beginning including the sources. This means that the clinical practitioners must know EBP to facilitate its implementation.

In conclusion, the evidence-based practice uses clinical expertise to conduct extensive research which is then sued in decision making. Roger’s diffusion of innovation theory is useful in Evidence-based practice because it looks at the specific factors that promote the adaptation and diffusion of a method. The factors that promote the diffusion of new clinical innovations include knowledge, age, and attitude. How innovationis viewed determines its adaptation.
