Borrowed Theory
Nurses have to take care of patients and ensure that they recover without challenges. The nursing profession ensures that regardless of the conditions that people face, they still have an opportunity to get better and work towards their destiny. Nurses play an important role in the healthcare facilities since they apply their knowledge and skills to deliver quality services to the patients. Despite their essential roles, nurses also face challenges which make it hard for them to meet the set goals and objectives of the hospitals. Some working environment does not present the practitioners with the facilities that would make them deliver quality (McDonald, 2006). When nurses go through the challenges, they become stressed and may not work towards the set goals and objectives. A common problem which nurses encounter is the cultural competence problem where they have to handle people from different parts of the nation and the regions where they work. The issue makes it hard for the nurses to perform their duties and responsibilities and deliver quality in the hospitals. The paper focuses on the utilization of the borrowed theory in solving the impacts of the issue of cultural competence in nursing.
Question One
Cultural competence results in challenges to the nurses as they aim to deliver the best services to the patients. Nurses have to work in different hospitals where they meet patients and workmates with different cultures from theirs. At times, handling the diversity might become challenging since the nurses have a different type of life. When nurses join new places where they do not understand the cultural values and beliefs of the patients and the workmates, they will not manage to utilize their skills and abilities in making the patients recover easily (Cantu, & Warren, 2003). They will become demotivated and stressed so that they may, in the long run, find it unnecessary to continue working in the facilities. Lack of cultural competence also leads to conflicts where the nurse may not deliver the expected quality of the patients. The impacts of the challenge of cultural competence, therefore, end up ruining the careers of the nurses and this may also have negative impacts on their lives through psychological problems.
The middle range theory states that there is the need to integrate both empirical and theoretical approaches in explaining some of the issues that affect various groups of people in the society. In the case of nursing, the cultural competence problem has significant impacts on how they perform their roles. It leads to lack of motivation and psychological problems that affect their lives in the long term. Understanding the theory behind the issue of cultural competence in nursing and the empirical research findings on ways through which the nurses have managed to emerge successfully despite the challenge, would assist other parties in the future (McDonald, 2006). The ability to socialize and solve conflicts in the nursing profession will require the application of both theoretical and empirical studies which give solutions to the issue. The socializing middle range theory would apply in solving the cultural competence problem. For instance, nurses will aim at interacting with each other so that they identify the best methods of assisting each in case of need.
Question Two
The borrowed theory, on the other hand, would make contributions by applying different approaches from various subjects which would then solve the cultural competence problem. The impacts of cultural competence always make the situation worse so that it becomes hard for the nurses to perform their duties. For instance, lack of motivation renders the nurses inefficient, and they fail to meet the demands of the patients in the healthcare facilities (Smith, & Liehr, 2014). The motivation theories would apply to ensure that the nurses can still handle their duties and remain useful in the hospitals. On the other hand, the application of the motivation will not only help the nurses to manage the short-term problems but the long-term ones as well. The use of the borrowed theory will incorporate many theories from different subjects where each will have an essential factor to consider in solving the problems associated with cultural competence. Also, the borrowed theories will focus on having long-term solutions in an efficient way that will not disorient the nurses.
The use of the borrowed theory will also incorporate some of the ways through which the nurses will enhance their communication and interaction with each other and with the patients so that a healthy recovery environment will grow. The application of the communication accommodation theory will play an essential role in ensuring that the nurses can work with each other and meet the demands of the patients in the healthcare facility. The hierarchy of needs, for instance, will apply in making the nurses aim at having cultural competence as they perform their duties in the working environment (Cantu, & Warren, 2003). On the other hand, nurses have to identify some of how they will handle the challenges associated with the issue of cultural competence and focus on solving them. In this case, the nurses will apply the different theories including the middle range theories to solve the problems that they may face in their daily operations. The borrowed approach is appropriate for the identified problem since it gives nurses options which they could use to make their professions better and successful. Also, the borrowed approach will provide options for the nurses in the different ways which they can apply to overcome the challenges which they face.
Question Three
The borrowed theory originated from the need to solve some of the nursing issues that required more information on the best strategies to eliminate them from the society. However, the implementation of the borrowed theories would only apply where they work together with the nursing theories. The use of the nursing theory development did not cover all the problems which nurses have to manage in their daily operations. There was the need to incorporate a different theory that would take care of most of the issues that nurses faced in their duties. After realizing that most of the nursing problems ended up unsolved, there was the need to implement other ways of solving the challenges which they faced in their operations (McDonald, 2006). The application of the borrowed theory came into action as it incorporates the arguments from various disciplines. The use of the borrowed approach also led to the development of the nursing theory of development where it could in a way solve most of the problems which nurses face as they take care of patients in the hospitals. The borrowed theory got its argument from the middle range theory which focused on incorporating the empirical and theoretical approaches to solving the nursing problems.
Question Four
In the past, the borrowed theory has been applied in different situations. For instance, the nurses used the theory to develop a unique body of knowledge using information from other disciplines. The information enabled them to formulate ways and methods which they could apply in solving most of the problems they faced while at work. The concepts and definitions, as well as the propositions of the theory, were applied in developing the nursing specific theories used today. The unique body of knowledge acquired through the borrowed theories focused on defining the environment within which nurses perform their duties (Cantu, & Warren, 2003). In most cases, solving the nursing problems requires the application of non-nursing specific theories. Most of the theories developed to assist in addressing the challenges associated with the nursing profession. The borrowed theories have thus played an essential role in the nursing profession where they have helped in identifying solutions to most of the challenges which the nurses encounter in their job.
Also, the borrowed theory was applied in trying to identify the use of empirically accurate information in the development of nursing theories. The borrowed theories were combined with the conceptual frameworks to determine the way in which nurses can benefit in solving all the problems around their career (Smith, & Liehr, 2014). On the other hand, the borrowed theories have assisted the nurses in solving most of the issues affecting nurses and their ability to deliver quality products and services. Nurses have to focus on making their professions value adding to the society within which they operate. Therefore, identification of methods through which they can solve the problems they face became possible through the implementation of the borrowed theory. Sharing of information between theories enabled the nurses to solve some of the challenges which they faced on a daily basis.
Question Five
Through the incorporation of the borrowed theory, I would use the arguments of the socializing and conflict theories in ensuring that nurses can share their ideas and help each other in solving the cultural competence problems. Also, I would apply the provisions of the theory of the hierarchy of needs to enable the nurses to remain motivated in their daily activities. In this case, the nurses will look forward towards what they need to achieve through their careers (McDonald, 2006). Also, the nurses will become determined to become better through the use of motivation thus will aim at achieving cultural competence thus work in various parts of the world with ease. I would then work towards seeing the nurses becoming determined to solve the challenges which they might face in their day to day activities with optimism and with the right attitude. In doing so, the nurses will eventually overcome the challenge of cultural competence and design methods through which they will handle daily problems.
Question Six
The borrowed theory and the middle range theory can work together where the application of empirical and conceptual frameworks will have to apply to identify the solutions to the challenges encountered on a daily basis. Also, the middle range theory gets concepts from different theories and ideas which it uses to achieve long-term solutions. On the other hand, the borrowed theory applies the arguments from various theories which would aid in solving the problems associated with the nursing professions (Cantu, & Warren, 2003). Therefore, bringing the two theories together will make it possible to have the best-designed methods and solutions to some of the challenges that nurse face when handling the issue of cultural competence. I would, therefore, use the two to design the best solution one that would be long-term and one which would solve the various problems which nurses experience as they work. The long-term solution to the challenge will give the nurses the most effective ways of handling the issue of cultural competence in future. Therefore, the use of the middle range theory and the borrowed theory will work in solving the problem of cultural competence and its impacts on nurses.
