What is the relationship between capabilities and core competencies?

Too many capabilities and core competencies might be interchangeable terms, however to me I feel that capabilities are those that a company can do along with its potential competition. Meanwhile a core competency is something no one else can do. Where the two things are similar is that competencies should be brought forth from the companies capabilities. I believe every capability could potentially become a competency in time, however they are often just capabilities or potential things the company can do.

I believe a capability is something a company can do competently and not as Coyne, Hall, and Clifford would state as a “world class standard” they proposed that “a core competence is a combination of complementary skills and knowledge bases embedded in a group or team that results in the ability to execute one or more critical processes to a world class standard.” . (Coyne, Hall, and Clifford 1997)
