Competing Needs.
Competing needs play an essential role in advocating and shaping healthcare policy. The competing needs are brought about by different stakeholders, such as patient’s needs, workforce, and availability of resources. The workforce needs for some medical professionals, such as nurses, doctors, and physicians, may need an increase in wages that will help keep up with the increasing difficulties in healthcare management and different pressures in enhancing accessible and improved healthcare (Holland et al., 2019). For instance, the pharmaceutical sector must advocate for different policies that enhance profitability based on investment and innovation in research. The patient’s needs are the other competing needs in which patients need affordable healthcare access. The increase in drug prices is leading to compromising the well-being of the patients, thus increasing the burden of healthcare. Allocation of resources needs to be balanced in accordance with the need to manage the prices of drugs and actively incest on different healthcare priorities such as technology and infrastructures.
Specific competing needs.
The balance based on the need to manage the healthcare costs with the focus of providing quality healthcare to all the people is challenging with the decreased workforce. Cost containment with the increased workforce as a competing need inadvertently contributes to compromised healthcare. The shortage of workforce is a national need in most countries, which leads to hampered access to quality healthcare to meet the patient’s needs (Goni-Fuste, 2021). The limitation of resource allocation and funding leads to limited resources for the quality healthcare system. The needs of patients should be matched with nurses’ needs, which may lead to the fair distribution of the workforce and meeting the needs of patients.
The Effect and how policy can address the competing needs.
The inappropriate address of the workforce needs leads to the limitation of healthcare professionals, which contributes to decreased healthcare access to the people. Based on the policy, the federal government should regulate drug pricing, ensuring the affordability of healthcare and the distribution of the workforce. Unfordable medication to the patients that meets the needs of patients may lead to decreased healthcare results (Holland et al., 2019). The policy can focus on enhancing medication costs, which promotes different generic alternatives, such as importing low-cost medications. The insufficient allocation of resources may lead to a strained system in healthcare. Policies may allocate a prioritized budget for controlled drug pricing, which enhances cost-effective medication.
