Cultural competence in nursing
Question One
Cultural competence in nursing has become a significant challenge that has affected their way of providing services to patients. Nurses serve people from different cultural, ethnic and religious groups. As a result, they need to have the best means through which they can handle the various expectations by the patients. They also need to understand the way in which they can offer quality services to the patients. However, research has shown that some of the nurses have failed to offer quality services since they do not have the skills that make them culturally competent (Kersey-Matusiak, 2013). Nurses have in some hospitals failed to deliver quality since they do not understand the expectations of the other people. In this case, knowing the different groups of patients would call for cultural competence where the nurses will be in sink with the needs and demands of patients from other cultural, ethnic and religious groups. Cultural competence has affected the nurses since they may have to work in different parts of the world where they will meet new groups of people all the time. as a result, understanding the various cultures might turn out a challenge that may hinder delivery of quality products and services to the patients
Question Two
The middle range theory is aimed at integrating both theory and empirical research. In this case, the theory seeks to solve most of the problems affecting various groups of people by acquiring sufficient data that will assist in building on some concepts of addressing the issue at hand. In the case of cultural competence, the nurses will have to apply the different sociological theories that will give them a way of understanding the needs of the society. In this case, aiming at having a unifying point will become necessary so that the nurses will understand the different methods to apply as a way of handling the patients. The nurses will also have to develop their theories which will enable them to manage the differences that people might have when in need of healthcare services (Bredow & Peterson, 2009). On the other hand, the nurses will have to evolve with the needs of the different groups of patients to ensure that they have access to the various services which they want. Patients keep on changing their tastes and preferences, and regardless of some of them being in risky situations, they still want the nurse to handle them in a way that they will feel comfortable. Therefore, the middle-level theory will apply in ensuring that the nurses have a deep understanding of the needs of the patients and once they change, they should have better ways of handling the situations.
Question Three
The middle range theory was developed by Robert K. Merton and is applied as a socializing theory which aims at integrating both theory and empirical research. The theory is based on and empirical phenomenon and creates various statements that can easily become verifiable by data. According to Raymond Boudon, the middle range theory applies similar concepts to those that other sciences apply. However, since there was the need to consolidate the sociological theories, it was essential to implement one of the approaches that could take into consideration the various arguments made by the other theories. In this case, the theory would have to apply the different concepts and put them together so that they could bring out a comprehensive and incorporative theory (Liehr & Smith, 2003). As a result, the application of this theory originated from the need of having one theory that could use the arguments from the different sociological theories. Therefore, scientists expected to have one theory that considered each of the arguments and helped 8in understanding the relationships between them. The emergence of the middle range theory happened, and up to date, the theory explains the different concepts related to the scientific theories.
Question Four
In the past, the middle range theory has become applicable in solving some of the problems associated with sociology. In this case, it has become necessary to have the theory implemented to deliver long-term solution to the different theories that explained similar issues in science. The derivation of the middle range theory from the grand theory implied that the application of the theory building techniques would in the long term lead to the success of the theories. In this case, the theory applied to give explanations to some of the reasons why theories differed in their arguments (Kersey-Matusiak, 2013). On the other hand, the theory was used to unify the scientists who felt that they had better arguments on some of the scientific and sociological issues around their lives. Therefore, the implementation of the theory ensured that each of the theorists felt in the right place since their argument formed a foundation for the middle range theory. Robert Merton felt the urge to appreciate each of the works of the theorists by ensuring that he came up with a theory that derived concepts from theirs and this in the long term contributed to a unified group of theorists and scientists.
Question Five
In solving the cultural competence problem in nursing, it will become necessary to understand some of the theories that previously applied to solving sociological issues. In this case, some of the theories including the conflict theory and the cultural theories provide different arguments related to the problem of resolving some of the differences that people may have and their perceptions related to some factors. In this case, nurses should aim at utilizing the various theoretical arguments by the different scientists (Kersey-Matusiak, 2013). Through the incorporation of the middle range theory, the nurses will have an opportunity to solve conflicts arising from cultural differences and offer the best care to the patients from various parts of the world. Therefore, regardless of the places where they will work, the nurses will have a chance to understand the needs of the different patients and serve them in accordance to the health conditions that may have an impact on their lives. Therefore, the theory will bring various concepts from theories that will enable the nurses to understand the best way to handle cultural differences.
