Mental Health Care
Healthcare was the primary defining plan for the 2020 elections in the United States. Voters were going to select their best candidate based on the health policies and reforms suggested by Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The primary health care issues addressed in the 2020 presidential elections included mental healthcare, Covid-19, and substance use. Both candidates approached healthcare with different agendas. This piece compares President Biden and Trump’s mental health policies and how the two presidents allocated resources to address the issue.
Agenda Comparison grid.
|President Donald Trump||President Joe Biden|
|Explain how each of the presidential administrations approached the issue.||President Trump created a task force that would address and increase the Veterans Administration budget to prevent suicide (Levitt, 2020). This is aimed at undoing the coverage and payment protection limiting patient’s access to mental health services. On the issue, President Trump suggested that his administration overturn the healthcare Act to determine the extent of equality rules.||Joe Biden also addressed the veteran issue and proposed to expand their mental programs within and without the veteran administration. He suggested that his administration would reduce suicide rates among LGBT individuals. Additionally, President Biden aimed at increasing the efforts to address the parity of mental health laws.|
|Identify the allocations of resources that the two presidents dedicated to this issue.||Trump suggested that his budget would increase the funding for the mental healthcare workforce. He proposed an allocation of $139 million a year to cater to mental health issues. He also suggested an increase of 30% in veteran Affairs grants and a $3 million Increase for SHAMSHA grants to facilitate the screening of more people for suicide cases (Dangor, 2020).
|Biden mentioned that he would hire more school psychologists and increase more mental health professionals to address the crisis calls (Dangor, 2020). The mental health professionals would be accompanied by police if the case is severe.|
|Which administrative agency would most likely be responsible for helping you address the healthcare issue you selected? Why is this agency most helpful?|| Donald Trump’s administration is associated with a reasonable budget plan for veteran administration concerning mental healthcare; however, I would not select his administration as it does not offer solutions for mental health parity laws, which could affect marginalized groups and immigrants in the country.
| However, I would choose Biden’s agency to help address the issue of mental health. Significantly, mental health services in the United States have limited options despite more individuals suffering from the condition. Increasing grants would not deal with the issue, but rather employing more psychologists in schools would help prevent mental health and suicide cases (Dangor, 2020). The professional can identify and deal with mental symptoms among teenagers and advise them on the benefits of drug abstinence. Addressing crisis call through professionals would be substantial in reforming drug abuse habits which in the primary cause of mental health issues.
|How do you think your selected healthcare issue might get on the agenda? How does it stay there?||My mental health issue in Trump’s administration is likely to get attention through the media. Addressing the issue often in media houses is expected to make my mental health issue remain on the Trump agenda.
| To get my mental health issue to President Biden’s administration, I would write a proposal to congress addressing a mental health issue. My suggestion would include unaddressed matters like the fate of drug abusers and teenagers undergoing depression in society. I would also consist of the relative case of marginalized people in the United States who have no medical insurance cover. If the problem is endorsed by congress, it is likely to be approved by the president’s administration.
|Who would you choose to be the entrepreneur/champion/sponsor of the healthcare issue you selected and justify your selection||Mental health issue relates to human welfare, therefore, Requires a sponsor with excellent knowledge in lobbying bills to the congress. I would choose Alex Michael Azar as my sponsor. Alex is a renowned American attorney and politician. He also has a reputation in lobbying and possesses excellent knowledge in pharmaceuticals.||Mental health issue relates to human welfare, therefore, Requires a sponsor with excellent knowledge in lobbying bills to the congress. For the past years, individuals and medical practitioners have concentrated on physical fitness and the absence of an illness. Attention has further moved from the issues affecting our mental well-being. It is thus essential to recognize and deal with the issue before it has become a national disaster. The National Alliance of Mental Illness has indicated that in five Americans, one must be experiencing a type of mental illness which translates to 10% of the total population (Babineau, 2021). The most effective forms of mental illnesses experienced by individuals include bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. Such diseases have made the lives of the victims unbearable therefore leading to severe cases of depression, drug addiction, and suicide,
Addressing mental health issues is vital at the country and individual levels. The problem disrupts society and ultimately affects the progress of the country. Therefore, addressing mental health would reduce the cost of health incurred by the government per fiscal year (Arabi et al., 2014). It would also reduce the rate of hospitalization of individuals, thus making them productive in society. Suicide rates are also likely to slow down, especially in cases that involve children and teenagers.
Ultimately, nurses play a vital role in mental health agenda setting. They are the advocates of patients in addressing the quality of health care and patient concerns in the hospitals. Additionally, nurses play a significant role in empowering patients and administering treatment and follow-up (Arabi et al, 2014). Their knowledge and expertise are therefore crucial in decision making and influencing the policy-making process. The government should thus give the nurse leaders a platform to set agendas regarding healthcare issues to empower them.
The mental health issue has increased among the American population for the past few years. Various presidential candidates such as Joe Biden and Donald Trump devised policies that would address the issue. Among the different approaches, I would choose Biden’s as it offers a solution to combat the problem and not now treat it. The government needs to address mental health to reduce hospitalization and the cost of treating mental health.
