Capstone Project – White Paper

Section One of the White Paper should include the following summary and background information:

Evidence in a literature review.

Detailed explanation of the priority need, including health determinants.

Succinct summary of the proposed solution for identified gap in service.

Gap in Services – View these resources which demonstrate how to use PolicyMap® to gather relevant, timely data regarding numerous health determinants.

Two reports are recommended for access to create the background information and summary of the gap identified:

A snapshot of life in an area, including information on its population, racial composition, age, income, workforce, and much more.

provides a summary of healthcare access, health behaviors, general health, morbidity, mortality, food security, and social determinants of health in a particular area.

Policy Map Support VideosVideo example, Mapping Health Risks and Developing Strategic Responses with Policy Map® demonstrating the use of Policy Map® to identify health determinants impacting HIV among residents in Orange county. The student identified within specific zip codes as a solution.

This area of the white paper should flash the brilliance of the proposed solution and compel the reader to believe what you are offering. Quality rather than quantity of the message is critical, so focus on the “wow” factor, your 30 second commercial for what you hope to accomplish. Visuals are excellent tools for communication in this area and can quickly summarize your proposal in an algorithm, model, or series of images.

Including an executive summary at the beginning of the white paper provides the reader with a brief overview of the contents of the white paper. This summary is your chance to grab the reader’s attention, much like the abstract at the beginning of a journal article. Remember, the reader has many items competing for attention, and you want your white paper to be the document the reader chooses to read for a thorough review of your proposal. Helpful tip: Even though the executive summary is the first part of the white paper, you may want to write this part last. Review this example of an Executive Summary in a White Paper and reflect on how to best summarize and structure the most relevant points in your proposal.

Main Purpose – State the purpose of the main idea in the white paper clearly and succinctly. Remember this executive summary is not about details of a proposal but the broad vision.

Aligned to Audience – Know your audience and state any vital stakeholders. Be inclusive and call out each group. Remember if they see their professional group listed in summary as essential partners, they are more likely to read the entire white paper.

Identified Gap – Identify the problem in a brief statement. Remember the executive summary is not the place to provide supporting data that will be part of the detailed background information in the first section of the proposal. In summary, describe the problem in broad terms in an attempt to capture the interest of a higher number of readers.

Solution – Include a brief description of a solution to the problem, including at least one positive impact. Focus on the benefits of the solution and give the reader a reason to take interest and consider action.
