NURS 6003 Week 2 Case Study

Nursing Question

This paper elucidates a “42-year-old man comes to the clinic with a chief complaint of pain, redness, and swelling of his right calf. He states that he had been working in his yard using a string trimmer when the trimmer slipped and cut his leg. He cleaned the wound with water from the garden hose and covered the wound with a large Band-Aid. Several days later, he developed a fever to 100.6˚ F and chills and noticed that his leg was swollen and red. He comes to the emergency department for definitive care.”

“Explain Why You Think the Patient Presented the Symptoms Described”

Left untreated, an open wound or skin can provide an infection point bacteria, leading to cellulitis (Blumberg, Long, &Koyfman, 2017). Based on the history provided, the client manifested with a fever, chills, and an inflamed leg because of a systemic bacterial infection, mainly staphylococcus. The manifestations indicate that the infection has spread to his bloodstream and lymph nodes.

“Identify the Genes That May Be Associated With the Development of the Disease”

Having a weakened immune system because of underlying disorders such as HIV/AIDS, leukemia, and diabetes increases an individual’s susceptibility to infection. Polygenic and mendelian host’s genetic factors also influence individuals vulnerability, and the genes that may be linked to the development of the disorder include tumor necrosis factor (TNF), “Transforming growth factor-beta 1” (TGFB1), and “Nitric oxide synthase 3” (NOS3). According to Król and Kepinska (2021), NOS is involved in inflammation and antimicrobial activity.

“Explain the Process of Immunosuppression and the Effect It Has On Body Systems”

Immunosuppression refers to the decrease in immune network activation, reducing the body’s capacity to ward off infection and disease. The infection leads to inflammation processes, during which chemicals from the client’s leukocytes enter the tissue or blood to safeguard against intruders. This increases circulation to the injury or infection point, causes warmth and redness, and some compounds cause fluid leakage into the tissues to cause inflammation. According to Venet, F., &Monneret, G. (2018), infections can also cause sepsis, a life-threatening organ dysfunction that can cause acute kidney injury and multiple organ failures.
