Introduction

My name is XX. I am XX years old, married/single with XX children(If you have children). I have been working as a XX for XX years. I have enjoyed every moment in this career as I have dreamt of it since I was a child; I believe and tirelessly work towards getting children with special needs to prosper equally with those without special needs. Besides my professional life, I love XX, XX, XX(your hobbies). It is important to find some personal time to refresh before I get back to supporting children with special needs for effectiveness.

My plan for applying in the MASE program and how it has helped me so far

Following my career mentioned above, I saw that I must enroll in this program of Mater of Arts in Special Education to gain new and reinforce the skills that I have on educating children with disabilities. More specifically, with the Lesson Design for Students with Mild to Moderate Disabilities, I will be able to come up with lesson designs that foster the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of children with special needs. Since I enrolled in the MASE program, I have gained profound skills in educating children with special needs firstly by understanding that it is mostly about individualizing the support and secondly, acquiring the know-how of educating children with the different learning disabilities.

How Course Learning Outcomes support my career goals

The course learning outcomes are in other words, the foundation of being able to educate children with special needs effectively. First, I will be able to design apt lesson plans. Secondly, I will apply assessment strategies to assess the effectiveness of my lessons on the children’s development and adjust accordingly. Thirdly, I will collaborate with the students, their families, and other professionals in the education process. Consequently, I will be an effective special education teacher I am working towards being.

Effectiveness of the assessment practices I have experienced so far

So far, the assessment strategies I have experienced as a student are very effective. After posting a discussion, I read other students’ discussion posts as well and assess mine against there’s, gaining more information and learning from theirs. The lecturers then read the posts, grades them, and get back to me with improvement recommendations. Fellow students also read my posts and give me supportive feedback. As a result, I improve drastically and by the end of the program, I am a distinguished learner.

Assessment and Monitoring of Student Progress: A Video Investigation

Role of assessment in measuring student progress.

The significance of assessment in teaching is very diverse and critical. With assessment, the teacher knows their students’ needs before, during, and after the lesson. The questions that teachers ask them themselves to act accordingly include but are not limited to the following: What kind of intervention do students need to better their study skills? How should I group the students? Are these materials effective? Which student is lagging behind? Which subject are they having challenges with? The answers to these questions enable the teacher to take appropriate measures. The teacher identifies the problematic areas and takes apt action (Cohen & Spenciner, 2009). He/she makes sure that all students are roughly at the same level and gets rid of ineffective teaching strategies and replaces them, and reinforces the ones that are working (Renard, 2018).

What I know about assessment and what I would like to learn

Assessment applies both to the students’ learning progress as well as the teacher’s

‘ effectiveness in teaching. An assessment provides all the information a teacher needs about a student i.e. their knowledge, performance, strengths, weaknesses e.t.c. Teachers can set standards I.e. what the different performances a student makes indicate on their learning progress. It enables evaluation of progress I.e. a student’s progress, most effective teaching strategies,  required changes e.t.c. It motivates progress e.g. when a teacher has identified the effective strategies they are implementing, how to improve these strategies, which strategies to get rid of, e.t.c. I would like to acquire more information and skills on the best strategies to promote ideal student development.

3 assessment strategies

Noonan, a 5th-grade teacher uses non-verbal communication from students to get progress feedback which is a strategy I would borrow. It is easily applicable to know how audible I am, whether a concept has been understood, any clarifications needed e.t.c. where the students nod when I inquire about such. Second, using tests is highly effective in assessing a student’s performance against his/ her classmate, against the average score, the evolution of their scores e.t.c. (Cohen & Spenciner, 2009). Thirdly, through observation and interaction with students where you observe students doing various tasks and rate how well they do it. The teacher also creates alone teacher time where the students will air their concerns and assistance they need. The teacher can also give the student unique and individualized positive feedback as motivation (Renard, 2018).
