NRS-433V Topic 1 DQ 2
Nursing research is used to study a dilemma or a problem in nursing. Examine a problem you have seen in nursing. Why should it be studied? Justify your rationale.
No one is immune to bulying nowadays. We often think that bullying only occurs in schools and among the younger population but that is far from the truth. Bullying in the nursing field is a very old problem that is still very much going on in our profession. Although bullying crosses all generation lines, the more experienced nurses, at times, tend to be more aggressive towards new nurses because they have little to no experience. The younger nurses bully older nurses because they might think their practice is antiquated, or that they are slow or cannot handle certain patients.
Whatever, the reason may be, it is still wrong. Bullying affects patient care, the corporation, and the nurse. Bullying can break communication, breaksteamwork and the nurse being bullied is more prone to make errors because he/she won’t ask for help. Working in a hostile environment also leads to more absenteeism or even increasing nursing shortage by having nurses leave the profession.
Bullying does not only come from nurses, many physicians are bullies and get away with it. Often times, even if they are reported to administration, nothing happens because they finacially contribute to the hospitals by doing sending their patients to certain facilities.
I have seen amazing nurses leave te nursing profession because of bullying. I think some research is needed in order to retain and improve nursing relationship.
