Topic 2 DQ 1
School age children can suffer from abuse at the hands of their parents, family mambers, or other people whom they often trust. Child abuse come in different forms, it can be manifested as physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect and educational neglect. Each year, over 3 million children are reported to state child protective services agencies. Rhe most common type of abuse among school age children is physical and emotional abuse. Each case is different but the clinical manifestations are generally the same. Some signs and symptoms that can be related to abuse include: unexplained bruises or physical injuries, abondonment, nightmare and sleep disturbances, behavior problems and aggresion towards adults, other children and pets. Children can also display isolation, difficulty learning in school, excessive fear towards a person/persons, and frequent absences from school.
As a healthcare worker often times we need to take a moment and make sure that certain cultural rituals are to not be confused with abuse. For instance, Asian culture uses “cupping”, a method used to provide the body balance between the cold and the hot. Cupping generally creates deep red marks that can later resemble bruises. Cultural considerations must be assessed so that a family will not wrongly be referred or acused of child abuse.
In the State of Texas, child abuse must be reported immediately. Failure to reprt suspected child abuse and neglect is a criminal offense. The Texas Department of family and Protective Services (DFPS) is the agency to call for any suspected abuse or neglect. Abuse/neglect can also be reported to any local or state law enforcementagency. It is important to know that the person reporting child abuse/neglect is protected by the law from liability when information is provided in good faith during a CPS investigation.
