Using the patient information provided, respond to the following questions: (a) What cultural considerations are important for you to remember while you interview Ms. Li? (b) What is the abuse assessment screen? (c) If abuse is discovered, what should you do?

Patient Information:

Patient: Sue Li

Age: 20

Ethnicity: Asian American

Ms. Li’s cultural considerations would be her understandings of balancing health with the use of the Ying-Yang theory. Her cultural beliefs should be respected and taken into consideration. Depending on the findings, the healthcare should be aware that Ms. Li would probably not make a health desicion without consulting with family first. Family is very important in the Asian cutural and the opinion of elders is highly respected. Asians are generally typically polite in social encounters and expect doctors to sort out their concerns. Asians also tend to smile when confused and embarrassed and often misunderstood as being detached.

The abuse assessment screen is a set of questions that assists the healthcare worker in the detection of abuse towards the patient by the domestic partner or someone close to the patient. The assessment tool includes questions abot feeling safe, being hit, pushes or feeling scared. In the event that abuse is detected or confirmed a case manager should be notified immediately and if the patient does not want to return home the nurse must act now and assure the patient that she/he will be safe, be supportive and file an abuse report. If the patient is in imminent danger the nurse can call 911. Being that Ms Li is Asian, if she presents bruises, the healthcare providers must make sure they are not from “coining” or “cupping”. These cutural practices often leave marks visible and often confused with bruising.
