NRS 434 Topic 4 Dq 2
For the middle-aged adult, exercise can reduce the risk of various health problems. Choose three health issues that regular physical exercise and activity can help prevent and manage. Discuss the prevalence of each of these health problems in society today. Describe measures that you would take as a nurse to assist clients with health promotion measures to incorporate exercise and physical activity into their lives. Include the kind of activities you would recommend, the amount of exercise, and the approach you would use to gain cooperation from the client. Support your response with evidence-based literature.
1.) Obesity: Obesity is becoming an epidemic in the US with more than 3 million cases diagnosed per year. Obesity results from taking in more calories than are burned by exercise and daily activities. Obesity related diseases include heart diseases, stroke, diabetes and certain cancers. It is estimated that the annual medical cost for obesity in the US is $146 billion/year. African Americans and Hispanics have the highest rates in obesity Obesity is higher among middle age adults age 40-59yrs.
2.) Diabetes: The Diabetes Orevention Prgram, a federal funded program showed that people can delay and possibly prevent diabetes by losing a small amount of weight through 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week in conjunction with eating healthy. African American, Hispanics, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have a higher rate of diabetes.
3.) High Blood Pressure: One in three adults have hypertension and only half have it under control. High blood pressure increases the the risk for heart diseases, and strokes, 2 of the leading causes of death in America. African Americans are at a higher risk than others.
As a nurse I would suggest/teach healthier food choices, portion control and more physical activity. For high blood pressure much emphasis is put into a low sodium diet and for disbetes is carbohydrate control.
Activity can be increased by setting a goal of taking between 9,000-10,000 steps /day. Parking farther away from work or stores. Taking the stairs instead of elevator and perhaps taking a walk in the neighborhood.Walking still is the number one activity recommended by physicians. Cardiovascular enhancing exercises are recommended for high blood pressure like brisk walking, swimming, bicycling, and dancing. Thirty minutes 5 times a week is the recommended time.
