Describe the key components to the mental status exam (MSE). How do the results of an MSE apply to diagnosis and treatment planning?

The main components of the mental status exam (MSE) include general appearance, behavior, and relatedness, speech and language, feelings, perception and memory (). Each of these aspects is critical in determining a person’s medical background. The data collected from these components can be analyzed to determine a theme that may be useful for the diagnosis of a person. For example, a person with poorly maintained hygiene, who seems sad, does not want to relate to anyone and is unresponsive to any attempt at socializing, may be diagnosed with depression. Additionally, the information retrieved from the MSE can be useful in developing a treatment plan for a patient. For example, a person’s dressing; speech and language can be used to establish the origin of a client. This data can be useful in designing a remedy model that is customized to fit within the patient’s culture. For example, a female, married Muslim may not be comfortable with interacting with other men during group therapy; thus it is vital that another form of treatment that may be appropriate is selected.
