POS 301 Topic 3 DQ 1
Federalism does take place within our government, an example being immigration laws. Federalism is when the different layers of our government that interface with each other. These issues are discussed not by what is right and wrong, but who is responsible addressing the issue. Immigration has been an issue and debate for many years now in the United States. Arizona passed a bill that gave power to the state to make the immigration laws, however this bill was deemed by the Supreme Court unconstitutional. “Arizona passed its comprehensive anti-immigrant bill, S.B. 1070, in 2010, and states such as Alabama and Georgia passed copycat laws the following year (Ramakrishnan, & Gulasekaram, 2014).” In my opinion, states should not be allowed to make their own immigration laws that is a decision to be made as a country. If states feel differently about our federal law they should try to change or create a new law instead. I don’t necessarily agree with our immigrations laws as they are right now, but I think that we should make laws and decisions as a whole. We should work together.
