UNV 108 Week 3 Topic 3 Journal Entry Leadership and Service

Leadership

Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or organization. To put leadership into my own words I would describe it as motivating and inspiring others to be the best they can. [JH1] To serve others means to do things for other people without expecting anything back in return. It also means to me having genuine concern for others and unselfishness.

My program of study is definitely preparing me to lead and serve. As a teacher leadership skills are very important and GCU is going to help me become the best leader I can be. GCU is going to help me prepare to lead by giving me all the knowledge I need in order to be a successful teacher and pass it on to my students. They offer a lot of different classes on all the areas of education I need to know as well as putting me in an 8 week student teaching course in order to build my leadership skills. [JH2]

President Obama is a great example of a well-known person who is exhibiting leadership and service. He is probably the biggest leader in the U.S.  He is a good leader because always reaches out to his audience and motivates them. I also think he shows good leadership because he acknowledges mistakes and works to make them better.

Reflecting on the learning objectives a key takeaway for me is leadership is a very good characteristic to have. I am definitely going to need to have good leadership skills as a teacher and just in life. [JH3] I’m [JH4] glad GCU is going to help me get there and succeed in being a great leader and serving people.

[JH1]Great examples of qualities that true leaders should exhibit!

[JH2]Leadership in education is extremely important.  Many students will look to you as a model of leadership and will emulate your actions when put into positions of leadership.  Be thinking about how to foster these leadership skills in your students through your examples and actions.

[JH3]One of my favorite bible verses is Exodus 18:21

“But select capable men from all the people-men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain-and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens”

Imagine if we all thought about this verse when we select people to hold positions of leadership!  How much better off would we be?!

[JH4]Avoid contractions in academic writing.

What do you think?
