UNV 108 Week 7 Writing Self-Assessment Reflection

Reflection

            As a writer everyone has different strengths and challenges. My strength as a writer is that I have good time management. I think that is the key to being a good writer because to write well you need to give yourself enough time to prepare and do so. A challenge I have as a writer is sometimes I overwrite and I feel as though my sentences don’t flow as well as they should.

            Based on my feedback I have received on my writing, I could improve on cutting the chaff. I could get my point across even better sometimes by using less words and not dragging out sentences. It helps when the assignment gives you a word count, because it makes me go back and cut out all the stuff that isn’t necessary and makes my writing sound like I wanted it to in the first place.

            Steps that I can take to improve my writing skills are practicing writing over and over again. You can always improve your writing no matter how good you are at it. Another way I can improve my writing skills is by getting feedback from my instructors and other peers. I think that will help me a lot to improve my writing because sometimes I need an opinion from somebody from the outside.

            My past writing really only includes writing I have done in school over all these years. I have done many writing assignments in school over the past 17 years, but, I don’t think you could ever write enough. My favorite kind of writing is persuasive writing. It’s easier for me to write when there’s a topic and a point to support. However, it’s good to practice all kinds of writing so you’re good at all of them not just one.

            Writing in my past will differ from the writing I do throughout my program of study because with each paper you write, the more knowledge and experience you have. Also, here at GCU they give you a lot more resources on writing and how to better your writing, which really helps. Writing strategies I will employ in order to be a successful writer for my program are to mainly have good time management and good proof reading and revising. Time management is the key to good writing because you need enough time to plan out your writing so it’s not rushed and done at the last minute. Also, proof reading is huge because that is when you can go back and fix everything in your writing to make it the best paper possible.
