Jacqueline Hood wrote an article for the Journal of Business Ethics about a study done to determine if the leadership style and values of the CEO of a company directly affects the ethical practices that occur within that company. The study used Rokeach’s typology with the four categories of benefits: personal, social, competency-based and morality-based. There were 2000 surveys sent to Corporate Technology Information type companies. The response percentage was only 19.6% even after two copies of the study were sent to the ones that didn’t respond and reminder cards between surveys.

It was proven “that the ethical orientation of the CEO is a critical issue to consider in understanding ethical practices in organizations” (Hood, 2003, pg. 7). Other results that were found was the transactional leader would only do what is legally mandated where the transformational leader will go above and beyond and implement “more voluntary socially responsible and ethical practices within the organization” (Hood, 2003, pg. 8).

This study titled Being “in control” may make you lose control: The role of self-regulation in unethical leadership collected data about unethical leader behavior using Bennett and Robinson’s workplace deviance instrument due to its “good psychometric properties” (Joosten, 2014, pg. 3). They believe those wrong choices are made knowingly and willingly. The researchers used a laboratory experiment in study 1 with subjects taking a morality test along with each one given a leadership role based on that test. The second study used the same morality test as in the first study, but they also used Bennett and Robinson’s organizational deviance scale to measure unethical leadership behavior. The study concluded that leaders that identify as being low in morality tend to require assistance to control themselves, while those that identify as being high in righteousness tend to not need support (Joosten, 2014, pg. 8).
