Part two
Evaluating the impact of prevention and treatment resources
Substance abuse treatment and prevention is a method used to prevent the start of drug abuse and also to reduce the use of drug substances. This method also tries to reduce progressions of problems which are as a result of the use of the drug. The efforts for treatment or prevention mainly focus on the surroundings that one is in. Most of the drug abuse prevention resources focus on underage, especially teens and children. The main substances that target programs focus on are alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, steroids, opioids, and cocaine, among others. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the contributing factors to substance abuse are environmental and internal factors (2011). Due to this, the United States applies different programs and resources which aim to prevent and reduce drug use. This paper evaluates the importance of national and local resources for the reducing and treatment of substances use disorders.
The U.S. has declared drugabuse as a menace that is affecting many youths’ lives. Annually, a lot of deaths are reported as a result of drug use and addiction. Alcohol abuse cases, inhalants abuse, and others are rampant in the U.S. Because of this worrying trend, andthe United States has initiated different programs both at national and local levels which have significantly helped in preventing and reducing abuse and use of drugs (Catalano & Hawkins, 2012). Many programs and resources that have been established at the national level are the NIAAA and Center for Substance Abuse and Treatment (CSAT). There are also many communities or locally based programs like the ones listed on the table.
First, NIAAA and CSAT resource centers are designed in preventing drug abuse in the United States. The two agencies significantly contribute to preventing and reducing the use of the drug in the U.S. The programs mainly contribute to tightening systems for prevention at the national level. CSAT promotes local-based programs for prevention and recovery for families and individuals in every community. The main goal of this federal resource is to eliminate the use of drugs in the community and rehabilitate individuals that have been affected by giving them counseling. On the other hand, community-based resources are spread across the country, and they also specialize in substance abuse prevention and recovery programs (Backer, 2010). They aim to inform the public about the effects of drugs and substances abuses. They run rehabilitation programs for recovery to the individuals that have been affected by substances abuse.
The effectiveness of these resources is seen by how they have helped many young people not to result to substances abuse and also how they have assisted many individuals to recover from drug use (Botvin& Diaz, 2011). These programs have made many people shun away from substances use. Government policies have influenced the success of these recovery centers significantly. Their effectiveness has been due to the favorable government by declaring some substances illegal. Most of the local recovery centers are funded through sponsorship from different individuals and organization. These centers play a prominent role in the fight against substance use and recovery. They are supported by states government mainly through creating an enabling environment for substance abuse prevention.
In conclusion, although the menace of substances abuse may seem to be impossible to eliminate, the above resources are concrete steps that have been taken to reduce drug abuse and treat drug-related disorders in the United States. The danger posed by drug use is too great to ignore. These programs and resources should continue targeting individuals how have been affected. Families and counselors should be involved to talk to children and adults who are at greater risk. This isthe long, will help prevent and increase treatment of drug-related disorders.
