Explain the relationship between phonemic awareness and reading readiness. Why is phonemic awareness so important in the development of early reading fluency?
Phonemic awareness is a critical skill for learning to read an alphabetically written language. Yet a fair amount of confusion, especially among educators, persists about what this skill is and why it is so important. Written for practitioners, this article describes phonemic awareness and discusses why it is a prerequisite for learning to read, how we have come to understand its importance, why it can be difficult to acquire, and what happens to the would-be reader who fails to acquire it.
Phonemic awareness is important in the development of early reading fluency because it is the primary predictor of early reading and spelling skills in kindergarten through 2nd grade. Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose are the king and queen of phonemic awareness. You should introduce your children to both literary luminaries and continue to make them a part of your read-aloud sessions.
