Handling Disparate Information
Directions: In a minimum of 50 words, for each question, thoroughly answer each of the questions below regarding Case 7: Handling Disparate Information for Evaluating Trainees. Use in-text citations when appropriate, according to APA formatting.
- Why is this an ethical dilemma? Which APA Ethical Principles help frame the nature of the dilemma? This is an ethical dilemma because Leo could become very insensitive to his clients who may come from a totally different background than his own. Not only ethically speaking but logically as well, it’s very difficult to shit the minds and hearts of people who may or may not come from exposure to different cultures and according the Ethical principles, I do feel that this frame could be very beneficial and changing his heart and mind about those whose ancestors are from a different dissent.
- Who are the stakeholders and how will they be affected by how Dr. Vaji resolves this dilemma? The stakeholders are Leo’s clients and those who are seeking guidance and instruction. I feel that they will be effected the most because not only are they giving their time and money to him, they are also opening their heart, mind, and spirit for help in areas that they are weak in, and could eventually latch on to ideas and values that are more detrimental to their lives and how they may treat others.
- What additional information might Dr. Vaji collect to provide him with a more accurate picture of Leo’s multicultural attitudes and professional skills? What are the reasons for and against contacting Leo’s supervisor for more information? Should he request that Leo’s sessions with clients be electronically recorded or observed? Dr. Vaji, could very well sit in on one of his clients and watch how he treats and deals with their issues. He could also, have someone come in under an alias name and watch his sessions as well to give Dr. Vaji a different perspective. It’s vital that each therapist not only represents themselves with the upmost respect for themselves and those they are helping, but also the businesss they represent.
- Is Dr. Vaji in a potentially unethical multiple relationship as both Leo’s externship supervisor and his teacher in the Health Disparate class? Why or why not? I feel that Dr. Vaji isn’t a hindrance to him and Leo’s relationship as externship and supervisor because it is a business and if certain precautions have to be in place for Leo, then that’s what may have to happen.
- To what extent, if any, should Dr. Vaji consider Leo’s own ethnicity in his deliberations? Would the dilemma be addressed differently if Leo self-identified as non-Hispanic white, Hispanic, or non-Hispanic black? I feel that Dr. Vaji should consider talking to Leo about his issues and problems concerning other cultures and get to the bottom of his issues. I feel that it may be more beneficial, until Leo is able to be honest with himself concerning his issues, and not identify hisself as anything at all.
- Once the dilemma is resolved, should Dr. Vaji have a follow-up meeting with the students who complained? I feel that he should speak to those students who gave him the heads up because they expressed concern about their fellow classmate in aiding Leo to be successful within the program. I feel that once Dr. Vaji is able to go back and allow the students to know that Leo has been taken care of, that will give them a sense of ease.
- How are APA Ethical Standards 1.08, 3.04, 3.05, 3.09, 7.04, 7.05, and 7.06 and the Hot Topics “Ethical Supervision of Trainees” (Chapter 10) and “Multicultural Ethical Competence” (Chapter 5) relevant to this case? Which other standards might apply?
- What are Dr. Vaji’s ethical alternatives for resolving this dilemma? Which alternatives best reflects the Ethics Code aspirational principles and enforceable standards, legal standards, and obligations to stakeholders? Can you identify the ethical theory (discussed in Chapter 3) guiding your decision? His alternatives would be to address the issue head on, watch his performance either physically or by an alias person, or give him an opportunity to go on sabbatical and get help for himself. By allowing him to remove himself from the situation as the problem, he’ll be able to heal properly and cover any issues in the future.
- What steps should Dr. Vaji take to implement his decision and monitor its effect
- I feel Dr. Vaji should seek opinions from his superiors as well. This allows him to look at all angles, process all possible outcomes, and come to a concrete conclusion for his program and for Leo. Dr. Vaji seems like a solid teacher who wants to see his pupils succeed so by going to seek guidance wouldn’t be over his head or even giving him a feeling of inferiority because he doesn’t have the answers just yet.
