Prejudice has traditionally been assumed to be the product of some form of malice, brought about by social or emotional forces. In recent years, there has been increasing research on how prejudice can result from cognitive processes, without malicious intent. Discuss how and why cognitive processes can produce prejudice. What is the impact of culture on prejudice? Once stereotypes and prejudices are formed, how do they come to be self-perpetuating?

Answer:

The cognitive component involves beliefs or thoughts that make up the attitude.Cognitive processes can produce prejudice by stereotyping, because stereotypying generally is all about a group of people assigned to virtually all members of the group regardless of the actual variation among the members which in tern simplify how we look at the world as a whole. (Given our limited capacity for processing information it is reasonable for human beings to behave like “cognitive misers”- to take shortcuts and adopt certain rules of thumb in our attempt to understand other people.(Fiske&Depret,1996: Jones 1990: Macrae&Bodenhausen,2000:Taylor 1981

I have many gay friends and people tend to think I am gay because I choose to like the people I am generally around each day my family has even questioned my sexuality and even though alot of people know that I am not gay I usually get stereotyped, rude gestures that would accompany prejudice and even in some situations discriminated against only because of the type of friends I have one fraternity actually denied me based soley on my aquaintances.

Human cognitive processing perpetuates stereotypical through the phenomenon of illusory correlation(Fiedller,2000,Garcia Marquese & Hamilton 1996.

Attitude and how we were brought up tend to play a major role in the impacting culture and prejudice in communities, and socities in which we live. Once stereotypes and prejudices are formed they become self-perpetuating by soley acting on the stereo types and by being influenced by our culture, family, and thoughts of a particular group of people.
