SOC 220 Week 5 Assignment Health Influences of the Environment

PTSD

Mood Disorder (depression)

Diabetes’s

Periodontitis

I believe that a large portion of the people that get PTSD are in the middle or lower classes.  This is because these people are more likely to have a large life changing event that would cause ptsd to manifest.  My mother for example has ptsd from an abusive ex, while I have ptsd from the military.
Depression is largely found in middle and lower classes because of financial troubles and the other related issues that come along with that class and finances.
I believe that diabetics can be  found in larger numbers amongst the middle and lower classes because of finances once again and that this is because of the cost of better more whole foods being higher (typically)
A passage from http://pulseandsignal.com/2008/12/does-disease-and-illness-vary-by-social-class/
Mentions that
“Because people in a low socio-economic class less able to buy healthy food, they are lacking many vitamins and other nutrients provided by a balanced diet”
According to http://pulseandsignal.com/2008/12/does-disease-and-illness-vary-by-social-class/
Periodontitis can be found in a larger populous of the middle and lower classes because they may not have a career or job that will pay for dental care and according to the same website this disease can be the cause of many other health issues like coronary artery disease and heart disease.

While PTSD, Depression (and other mood disorders), Diabetes, and Periodontitis are not strictly found in middle and lower classes I believe that I have found enough evidence to at least leave the suspicion of the lower classes having more cases of these health issues that the upper class.  While an article on http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1994199/ would try to say that Americans deny the fact that there are various social classes, it is obvious this isn’t the case to me.  I think Americans have always had a class structure, no matter how much we relied on this system or not, and it is also clear that people of lower financial classes have more health concerns.

PTSD is caused by a traumatic and stressful event, and I believe that more people in lower classes have more chances at this happening.  Apa.org has an article that talks about SES and violence, this one interested me because it shows how PTSD could be accounted for in higher populous of lower classes.

Ultimately my belief is that the disparity of income from the higher classes to the middle and lower classes and the causes that has on human life styles explains why people in this situation may have more mental and physical health issues.   My concern is that I found no site that or research that has quality ideas to start fixing the problems, besides fixing this disparity.  Yes this is a social problem and it has been interesting to me, but I find that  fixing the disparity in Capitalist free America isn’t the best solution in my opinion.
