PCN 605 Topic 1 DQ 1

According to the 2014 ACA code of ethics “Counselors respect the diversity of clients, trainees, and research participants and seek training in areas in which they are at risk of imposing their values onto clients, especially when the counselor’s values are inconsistent with the client’s goals or are discriminatory in nature.” Review Butman and Yarhouse’s article “Psychopathology Through the Eyes of Faith: Integrative Reflections for the Classroom and Beyond” and briefly describe their approach to teaching psychopathology. Identify two or three elements you find interesting about their method of teaching psychopathology and explain why they are important to you.

The approach that Butman and Yarhouse use to teach psychopathology is through the use of faith to avoid offending people from different backgrounds. The treatment of people uses a study recognized as the calamities of the soul. It is done through assessing, treating and preventing the concerns which influence an individual, the embodied soul. There are the factors which are concentrated on during psychopathology, and these include deviance, dysfunction, distress and danger leaving out some important factors. The teaching concentrates on the emotional and psychological struggles of an individual which influences the life of a person. The method of teaching is interesting considering that the counselor is required to be aware of different religious faiths so that they can be appealing to the patients. The faith is then related to the factors in the life of an individual and a solution to the mental issue determined ( Butman and Yarhouse , 2014).
