PCN 605 Topic 1 DQ 2
Oftentimes, the presentation of mental illness is regarded as scary or threatening. How is this concept perpetuated in the media and other social outlets? Discuss and provide at least two examples of how this is occurring in society today.
ANS:
The presentation of mental illness as a scary disease has led to the stigmatization of the people suffering from it especially through the media and other social outlets. The mentally ill individuals are labeled as a dangerous stereotype which is associated with crimes such as disrupting peace in the society and drug abuse. The negative portray makes the society avoid interacting with these individuals as they are seen as if they should belong to mental institutions locked down, instead of getting help from the community members ( Byrne, 2000) . Most individuals who have mental illness do not require to be locked down but through daily help and being accepted in the society after reintegration can help them. However, any mental case, even when not serious, these people are victimized, and it ends up making their condition worse instead of helping.
