PSY 510 Topic 7 DQ2
You have a client who is of a different culture and faith than your own. You are not comfortable dealing with them due to past negative feelings from childhood. What are your ethical and legal obligations? Why are these legal and ethical obligations in place?
Answer:
These are very important detailed questions with regards to my own personal thoughts I am responding with my own judgement and thoughts, as a professional in any field especially social sciences the first two most important things to do would be both too acknowledge and admit that you may have biases or may become bias, and the second would be admitting to not being comfortable with the client because of cultural indifferences, that would cause, conflict of interest regarding a clients cultural beliefs. My ethical and legal obligations would be to address the matter immediately by letting a senior supervisor, fellow colleague, or partner know that I am not at liberty to assist the client due to cultural indifferences and beliefs, and would advise them to relieve me from the case and reassign me to another case. There are legal and ethical laws and standards in place because of situations like this and to assure the clients gets treated properly both morally, ethically, and by the laws that are put in place.
In a field so complex, where the indiviual and social values are yet but ill defined, the desire to play fairly must be given direction and consistency by some rules of the game. These rules should do so much more than help the unethical psychologist keep out of trouble;they should be palpable aid to the ethical psychologist in making daily decisions.
