Psychological First Aid is an acute modular intervention for children, adult, families and responders to reduce distress and improve their functioning and coping skills. It is a six hours online collaborative course which prepares participant to offer first intervention to disaster survivors to help them cope. Also, it helps the provider to” establish a non-obtrusive, compassionate human connection with survivors” (nctsn.org, 2020). The contents of the course are made up of video demonstrations, mentor tips from trauma survivors and innovative activities that demonstrate the participant’s understanding of the topic.
After completing the course, the participants would be able to identify the five early -intervention principles; Define psychological first aid and list its basic objectives; describe the eight strategies(core actions) of PFA; identify general guidelines to provide PFA; Adapt PFA in diverse settings and with different population and identify ways to take care of yourself before, during and after providing PFA. However, the first part which is also the first three hours of the entire course was on the goals and objectives of PFA, five early -intervention principles and the eight strategies(core actions) of PFA.
The main topic discussed in this part of the course was on the eight strategies (core actions) of psychological first aid. This is a broad topic, so it took me about three hours to ran through this topic and it was also the last session for this first part of the course. In this session all the eight strategies were described and well explained with examples. It was well organized and easy to understand especially with the YouTube attached also made it more practical. I gained more knowledge on mental health and wellness after taken this part of the psychological first aid training.
