The definition of mental illness is medical conditions that interrupt an individual s in the way he or she thinks, feels. It also affects an individual’s mood, ability to associate with other people and his or her everyday functions. In the same way as arthritis is a disease of the discs and bones, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often affect one’s ability to deal with the usual needs of life (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2011).
Many causes of mental illness consist of brain damage, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. Even though mental illness is not curable, one can manage it with a combination of medications and counseling (psychotherapy).
